Appliances in Toronto and the GTA Did you know ... the first household refrigerator was manufactured in 1913. It was called the Domelre and was made in Chicago. The early refrigerators were mainly just an insulated casing cooled by brine coils. A chilling unit containg sulphur oxide and oxygen was connected from the basement. The first mass produced, fully functioning fridge was produced in 1931 in Stockholm, Sweden, under the trade name Electrolux and in the United States under the trade name Servel. Just prior to this in 1939 General electric made sold the first dual temperature fridge with the ability to keep frozen foods in a seperate compartmnent.
