Technology and New Inventions - Rocket Propelled Aircraft

Blast From The Past - Rocket Propelled Aircraft

The first rocket propelled aircraft to break the sound barrier was the American Bell X-1. It reached a maximum speed of just over 1100 kph. The X-1 could not take off on its own, it was launched from an aircraft carrier and led to the develoment of more efficient propulsion and much faster rocket propelled aircraft. One of these was the X-15, which in 1967 reached a maximum speed of 7297 kph. The application of special heat resistant materials around the cabin allowed it to withstand temperatures exceeding 3,000 degrees F.
