Stem Cells and RegenerationI recently stopped in at a pet shop with a few minutes to kill and noticed that a small lizard was missing one of its back legs. I asked the saleswoman if it was the kind that can regenerate, and she confirmed that it was and that it would grow back in around a month or so. I joked that we could extract the dna and isolate the gene that triggers the regeneration, attach it to a harmless virus and inject it. Years ago, i think the mid eighties, in one of the earliest succesful attempts at regeneration, scientists had caused a frog that did not have renerative capabilities, to regrow an arm. I only remember that they had used a nickle alloy implanted in the remainder of the limb and a very tiny electric current to stimulate it. That was 20 years ago, today stem cell research has advanced to the point that some believe human life expectancy may increase dramatically. At least for those who can afford it. | ![]() |
