Stem Cell TechnologySurgeons have used stem cells from fat to help repair skull damage in a 7-year-old girl in Germany, in what’s apparently the first time such fat-derived cells have been exploited to grow bone in a human. MSNBC An utterly fascinating breakthrough from a year ago and still big news. There have also been breakthroughs in repairing damaged nerve tissue with stem cells. Soon there will be hope for millions of people with a variety of disablities, or at least those that will be able to afford these miracle treatments. In the near future other applications for stem cells will be popular. Certain birth defects in children may be able to be corrected from blindness to hearing defects. Amputees may regrow a lost finger, arm or leg. Perhaps dentists will no longer need to use metal and ceramics, they will regrow the teeth either locally or in the lab. Male pattern baldness may finally see more promise than stinky lotions that take months and do little or nothing (grumble). Sports injuries from torn ligaments to broken bones repaired as good as new. Michael jackson could grow a new nose ! Or the unthinkable, he will clone himself, get the origianl nose off his clone and start the whole process again ! Or steal lock of Diana Ross's hair, clone her and get the nose he always wanted. These are just applications for stem cells that have been unaltered. When they start to tweak the stem cell it will get even more interesting. Perhaps in the future they will be able to design them , so instead of growing bone (calcium) it would grow metal or another element or add to the bone, skin or muscle a stengthening agent to make the subject more durable than before. |
