There are rarely any truly great horror movies. Over the years there have been a lot of good ones but also a lot of plainly formulated paint by numbers junk. Rarely is there an imaginative plot with decent special effects. Like mills, some film companies will churn out really cheap productions, mixing scenes of gore with scantily clad women, running and screaming, generally just freaking out while some guy chases them around. Slap on a happening soundtrack by a few pop bands and voila !
I must admit though, after watching a few of these types of films I did experience feelings of dread and horror. But that was after the movie when I realized i could have rented something else with my 5 bucks.

Stir Of Echoes
Decent plot, excellent acting and great special effects. There is a cool stop motion technique that just started to get used around the time of the making of this film. This technique is a good example of the evolution of the art. Similar effects can be seen in the Grudge and Sixth Sense.

Sin City
Not really in this genre but it gets pretty gruesome for a crime drama. Great stars in this one, Mickey Rourke , Benicio Del Toro, Clive Owen, Rosario Dawson, Powers Booth, Jessica Alba, Rutger Hauer, Bruce Willis, Eliah Wood, Nick Stahl. The casting was genius. 16 wins and 29 nominations. If you havn't seen Sin City yet, rent it.

Starring Tim Robbins in one of the creepiest films you will ever see.

Ghost Story
Starring Fred Astaire  Was best ghost movie for 3 decades untill The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense
Starring Bruce Willis, set a new standard for the ghost story.

The Shining Jack Nickolson in the now classic Steven King story. As good as Peter Straubs ghost story , genuinely creepy flik.
